Historical tradition:
Labdanum was one of the early aromatic substances of the ancient world. It
is obtained from several species of the Cistus or rock rose family (Cistinae).
It is listed in the Bible under the name ‘Oncha’ as an ingredient in the ancient temple incense of Moses. It was also used by the ancient Egyptians as an incense and for cosmetic purposes. Dioscorides recorded the ingredients for the so-called ‘Royal Unguent’, which included labdanum. Since the Middle Ages in Europe, labdanum has been used in skin-care ointments for its healing, soothing properties; much like myrrh, and also as a base for perfumes. Its scent resembles ambergris, and it is extremely long lasting and stable.
